Uttar Pradesh : A horrifying incident has come to light in Gorakhpur where a young man was sexually assaulted. The perpetrators blackmailed and extorted money from him, leading the distressed victim to hang himself in a yoga temple. The police have arrested two of the accused and sent them to jail.
Incident Details:
On Thursday afternoon, four men held a young man from Maharajganj district hostage and assaulted him in a hotel located in Rail Vihar, Gorakhpur. They beat him with a belt when he resisted and threatened to circulate the assault video, extorting money from him.
The Victim’s Suicide:
Unable to bear the mental trauma, the young man hanged himself in a yoga temple in Shahpur. Following the incident, the Chilua Tal police arrested two of the accused on Saturday morning for sexual assault and extortion.
Victim’s Identity:
The young man, from Shyamdeurwan in Maharajganj district, was staying with his elder sister in Chargaon, Shahpur, preparing for competitive exams. He was unmarried, and his elder brother worked in a yoga temple in Shahpur.
Friendship on Instagram:
Four days prior, the young man had befriended someone named Karan Thakur on Instagram. On Thursday afternoon, Karan invited him to a hotel in Rail Vihar, Chilua Tal, where he and three associates assaulted the victim. They also beat him when he resisted.
Blackmail and Police Runaround:
Threatening to release the assault video, the perpetrators extorted money from him. The victim managed to escape and reached the Medical College police post with his sister. The police directed them to Shahpur police station, which redirected them to Chilua Tal police station. At Chilua Tal station, he was advised to return the next day, Friday, at 11 am. Following instructions from senior police officials, a case was registered against the four accused the next day.
Arrests and Police Behavior:
On Saturday morning, the police arrested Karan alias Ashutosh Mishra from Bihar’s Puraina in Gopalganj and Devesh Rajnandan Sharma from the BRD Medical College campus in Gida. Three mobile phones were recovered from them. The police later presented the accused in court, from where they were sent to jail.
Distressed by Police Behavior:
The victim’s family alleges that after the incident, they went to the Medical College police post, Shahpur, and Chilua Tal stations multiple times, but were met with delays and irrelevant questions. This caused significant distress to the victim. Chilua Tal police also did not register the case on Thursday, taking action only the next day.
Restless Night and Suicide:
The victim’s elder brother took him home late in the evening. According to the brother, the young man was disturbed until around 1 am, with his nephew trying to console him. After everyone went to sleep, he hanged himself from a teak tree in the compound. Early in the morning, around 5 am, people found him hanging and raised an alarm.
Section for Abetment of Suicide:
SP North Jitendra Kumar Srivastava stated that a case had been registered against the four accused under serious charges, and investigations were ongoing. Following the victim’s suicide, an abetment of suicide charge will be added to the case.
